7 Signs You Are Meant to be a Financial Advisor

So, you are curious or contemplating to be a Financial Advisor?  But you are not sure if you can or you have what it takes?

If you are praying for signs whether you would want to take the plunge of not, then, these may be the signs you want to get and decide if you are meant to be one of us.

1. You Enjoy Long Talks with Friends and New Acquaintances

For me, working means going to a coffee shop, drinking a cup of coffee (decaf), while enjoying the company of a longtime friend or a newly found friend.  In the process of catching up, we talked about personal/family finances, how hers is, and how it can still be improved. Educating the person comes in as a natural process of just talking.  Luckily, for my friend, I can also provide solutions to her existing financial problems.

2. You Love Travelling the World For Free

For only 6 years in business, I was able to travel to places I have never imagined I could possibly go.  The best thing about it is that if you are a Financial Advisor, it is always for FREE. Run-down of places I have been to starting 2011: Balesin, Singapore, Thailand, China, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Canada (Quebec, Toronto, Ontario), London, England, Scotland and Russia.  For this year, I already qualified to attend the Switzerland conference.

3. You Like Attending Parties or Gatherings (Wedding, Reunion, Interment)

I remember joining a club that plays “Board Games,” in the process, I was able to enjoy and learn, plus I was able to get new clients from newly found friends.

Being a Financial Advisor, attending to parties, gathering and joining clubs are essential part of being in this business. It’s your business to be acquainted to more people as much as possible.  Having memberships to the gym, clubs or even sports are part of your job.  It is because those are the places where you can get clients from.

Have you thought of any other job that does that?

4. You Hate to Get Tied to an 8-5 Job

As a lactation consultant (I’m a medical doctor if you don’t know), when I gave birth, I vowed to give the best food my child will need, which is breast milk.  I would like to breastfeed not only for 2 months but as long as my child wants to.  She is now 4 years old, and I am proud to say, I am still breastfeeding her.

One of the best feature of this job is I get to choose when I want to work and who I work with. This is also the best reason why I stayed as a Financial Advisor. I get to be with my family whenever I want to and whenever it is needed.

5. You’re OK to be other people’s “go-to type of person”

If you are your friends’ financial advisor, you also become their advisor for almost anything in the world.  Most of my friends turned clients would call me before they do some of their most important decisions in their lives.

I get a call from a client-friend asking me about his plans on proposing to his girlfriend, and if he can handle the family finances.

I get a call from a client-friend asking for advice if  it is ok to migrate to a certain place with his family.

I get a call from a client-friend asking my views on what car to buy and where to have it financed.

I get a call from a client-friend if she will have to stop breastfeeding when she became pregnant again.

I love to be the person they consult with on almost anything and it feels good that I feel they value my advices. If you are someone who doesn’t like to do this, then, this career may not be for you.

6. You Want to Make the World a Better Place to Live In

A 30-year-old client of mine died while on duty as a doctor. Believe it or not, I was the first person they called when he died, even before they called his wife.  He turned his child a 9-month-old an orphan and his wife, a 29-year-old widow. Needless to say, the proceeds of his life insurance will go a long long way.  It can be used for his child’s education, health needs or even just for food and building up their family. This career provides an opportunity to help those who needed help the most - ALL THE TIME!  Be it in death, critical illness or retirement.

7. You Love to Take Up Challenges Everyday of Your Life

Years before becoming a Financial Advisor, I came to know that I suffer with “Approval Addiction” it’s a psychological battle of pleasing everybody as much as I can.  I don’t like being rejected and I feel so bad not to be liked by EVERYONE.  I remember praying to God, “Lord, please help me.  Please help me not to hate rejection, and stop my Approval Addiction.”  It’s debilitating.

As a Financial Advisor, during the first days on the job, I literally cried to sleep and I almost given up. I was rejected 3x a day! Imagine the feeling of an “Approval Addict” being rejected 3x a day, it’s like the end of the world for me.

Little did I know that it’s God’s way of answering my prayers in the most obscured way. The whole experience hardened my heart on rejection but made me leap with joy if I was accepted and praised for the service I did.

Yes, it’s true that, as a Financial Advisor, you may need to eat rejection for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  But it is also one of the careers that can make you a better person in the process.

Looking back, I know I was able to get past with my “Approval Addiction”, slight na lang, healthy even!  Now, I can confidently say, God used this job to make me a better person.

Not all are icing in the cake. To be able to enjoy all the signs above, would require hard work, determination and perseverance.
