5 Steps To Help You Deal With Rejection When You Are A Financial Advisor

They say if you are a financial advisor, you eat rejection for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  That’s true.  If you are luckier, even sometimes with snacks in between.

Growing up, we all had our own experiences with how we encountered and dealt with rejection along the road we took to get to where we are now. Whether it be an output we worked so hard on that was rejected; or even applying for a job we dreamt of having. We all had to deal with it at some points of our lives.

The fear of rejection is one of our deepest human fears. We're anxious about the prospect of being cut off. And honestly, there is no denying the fact that we can never work in the Financial Industry without getting rejected for at least a hundred times.

Let me be clear,  the fear of getting rejected will not go away. But with that being said, there will always be way to make things a little less worse. I do not think that there is one approach that will work for us all but here is what worked for me and my team. I hope that it will make things easier for you to cope up with. Even just a tad bit.

1. Accept and Understand.

Though you might have heard this for a thousand times already, it is always a great way to go. Accept and Understand that fearing rejection is normal and it is completely normal. Accept and Understand that no matter where you go, you will not always receive an answer of "yes". Accept and Understand that life is not always rainbows and butterflies.

2. Do not pressure yourself.

Sometimes, we tend to forget about what matters the most; us. Yes though we have a reason to be pressured, we can always try to replace "pressure" with "motivation" . We get pressured since there will be a struggle and the feeling of wanting to meet everyone's expectations. But sometimes we ourselves become the reason of our own struggle. We most likely exaggerate how we see what others expect from us.

3. Take time to Reflect.

Whenever you get rejected, take some time to ask yourself these three questions:

- "Why was I rejected?

-"What did I do wrong?"

- "How can I improve next time?"

4 . Rejection = Motivation

After you ask yourself those questions, I guarantee that whatever answers you come up with will scream that there is always room for improvement. Think about it. Being rejected by potential clients seems unpleasant but being rejected is one step closer to your goals. Be thankful instead since it will teach you with what are the things you need to improve so that you wouldn't receive it as much next time. The people who reject you are people who may not realize how they are helping you by doing that. There is no point with spending all your time sulking and feeling bad with the rejection you just encountered, instead use that time to think of what you can do to improve so that you would not get rejected the next time around.

5. Set goals.

By doing so, you can clarify what are the goals you want to achieve and how you plan to reach it. It is very important to set goals that are realistic. Don't go for goals that are too high, instead set other goals that can help you reach your main goal. No , I am not trying to discourage you. Milestones are very important because as you reach your goals or stepping stones, it will actually motivate you more.

In reality, rejection is not something to be feared for since rejection does not mean failure. Rejection should not be taken in a negative way.

They say that "Experience is the greatest teacher." which is in a lot of ways true. You will never learn how to cope with rejection if you have not experienced the rejection part itself. Rejection should be your foundation towards your dreams and goals. There is so much more to life than that. Yes, it is very normal to feel down but please, do not let it get to you. Through time you will improve all because of the rejections you received in the past.
